City councillors have asked staff to report back on the potential impact of an increase to HSR fares as they grapple with a 2.2 percent tax increase -- an average of 75 dollars per household -- as part of this year's budget.
During today's budget meeting, Councillor Lloyd Ferguson suggested there are big expenditures within the HSR, like fuel and staffing costs, adding that they have more work to do. The Public Works Department has asked for the biggest budget increase of 4.8%.
Council also voted against cancelling Winterfest, which was recommended by the General Manager of Economic Development. Tim McCabe had said the festival isn't very well attended and could save the city 36 thousand dollars.
Councillors will deliberate the budget over the next month and is scheduled to give final approval on March 27. They meet again on March 7.
