The symbolic first step has been taken towards the first expansion of Burlington's Joseph Brant Hospital in over 40 years.
City, government and hospital officials have taken part in a groundbreaking ceremony at the future site of the Halton McMaster Family Health Centre.
Along with an 850 space parking garage, the family health centre marks the first phase of the hospital's 312 million dollar redevelopment. It is to be completed next spring.
Phase two, to be finished in 2018, will include new operating rooms, the addition of about 80 inpatient beds and an expanded cancer clinic.
60 million dollars has been committed to the project by the City of Burlington. The Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation is in the midst of raising another 60 million within the community.
