While the city continues to try and find a reasonable way to deal with the fare parity issue for city transit, there is one suggestion coming forward.
Councillor Sam Merulla wants to create a confidential testing system for disabled HSR users.
It would judge if a rider is able to pay for the bus, regardless of the nature of the disability.
If the rider could prove the fare is beyond their means, they would get a free pass.
The move is in response to the fare parity plan that would have cut the cost of DARTS to the same level as the bus.
But it would have also cut the free rides for blind residents and “voluntary pay” options for riders with mobility devices.
The idea goes to council next week.
