In light of the Senate spending scandal and word that the Auditor General will now explore the spending habits of all Senators, we should be demanding , not suggesting, but demanding, more accountability from all of our elected leaders.
MP’s will tell you that the rules don’t allow them to do that; that’s a crock !
It was the MP’s who made that rule and they can change it, they just don’t want to.
But why not cast this accountability net even wider and ask provincial and even municipal politicians to tell us how they spend our money?
In many cities now, including Toronto, taxpayers can go online and see just what their Councilor is spending on a monthly basis.
In Hamilton we only get an annual report about Councilors expenses and frankly, it’s purposefully vague and gives very little insight into how each Councilor spends money .
I should remind you that even though our Council has demanded 0% increases from other City departments, they gave themselves huge increases to their own office budgets and that included hiring new staff…. that’s a classic case of ‘ do what I say, not what I do.’
I know the answer from Council has always been, ‘don’t worry, trust us to spend your money wisely’.
And that’s exactly what the Senators told us too.
