It’s being called the next step in improved transit in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area.
Premier Kathleen Wynne has launched a new 13 member task force to come up with funding suggestions to expand public transit and deal with congestion on the roads in our area.
She says the panel will consult with the public on funding suggestions from MetroLinx.
Those suggestions include a one percent hike in the GST and a five cent a litre gas tax.
Wynne says improving transit and investing in smart, sustainable infrastructure is critical to growing Ontario’s economy and creating jobs.
The Premier adds the panel will also consider other options to find an estimated $34 billion to expand and upgrade public transit in the heavily congested region.
The government says people in the greater Toronto-Hamilton area spend an average of 82 minutes a day commuting, and warn that will jump to 109 minutes a day by 2031 if nothing is done.
The panel includes reps from developers, home builders, the CAA and unions including Liuna’s Joe Mancinelli.
Hamilton’s Mohan Nadarajah is one of the so-called citizens members.
Wynne says the task force will report back with suggestions by the middle of December.
