Phil Kessel, David Clarkson, Zack Kassian, Dale Weise, etc., etc.
The NHL has been busy this preseason, handing out suspensions to careless, reckless, or just cranially challenged hockey players.
Kessel was the latest to face the music, receiving a 3 game ban for slashing Buffalo’s Jon Scott on Sunday.
But it’s not 3 regular season games… it’s 3 preseason games.
It’s hardly a penalty for a player who has made his team’s opening night lineup.
If anything, it’s a vacation until the regular season begins.
What a dumb move by the NHL.
Any dirty hits, low blows, errant sticks that you should always be in control of… and suspension worthy infractions during the preseason should translate into missed games during the regular season.
Mind you, I wouldn’t have given Kessel a 3 game regular season ban for his slashing fit.
But it’s at least good for one game, a paycheque missed, a message sent and hopefully a deterrent.
But suspending guys from preseason games is absolutely useless.
