The Director of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says he feels for the family of Steve Mesic, but is denying their claims of discrepancies in the report released last week.
Mesic was shot to death in an exchange with Hamilton police in early June.
The SIU report says the officers were justified in the use of deadly force because Mesic refused to drop a shovel he was carrying.
Among the issues the Mesic family is pointing to is the lack of a pathology or autopsy report.
SIU Director Ian Scott says all police shootings are treated as controversial, so the results are routinely submitted to a second pathologist for review and that takes time.
Scott says he hopes the eventual inquest may give the family a better understanding of the events, but adds even that may not satisfy their concerns.
