Enbridge may be asked to put up a billion dollars for insurance to cover clean up costs if the Line 9 oil pipeline should fail.
The Ontario government says the financial safety net should be a condition of approving the plan to reverse the flow of oil in the pipeline.
It runs from Sarnia to Montreal through Flamborough.
However, Ontario says the company only has 685-million dollars U.S. in coverage and 300-million in committed bank lines to draw on.
The request is part of Ontario’s submission to the National Energy Board hearings into the reversal plan by Enbridge.
