Eccentric British Comedian Russell Brand is trending on social media these days because of his ingeneous rant about the current political system.
Brand admitted that he has never voted in an election because he refuses to participatein a system that he says, has caused so much angst and injustice.
He envisions a Utopian world in which wealth is distributed equally and people have a voice in government.
He goes on to suggest that a revolution is coming that will overturn the current democratic system.
Brand’s unsophisticated analysis fails to acknowledge that there is an equally angry and highly financed entity at the other end of the political spectrum who want to destroy the current system of government for the sole purpose of increasing the gap between rich and poor.
Nor does he understand that there are many examples of governments who do address the inequities of health care and education and standard of living and not coincidently, they occur in countries with a much higher voter turn out during elections.
Civil rights victories in places like South Africa and Eastern Europe were done through the ballot box, not by insurrection.
By refusing to vote, Brand is relinquishing the very tool that could bring about the changes that are needed.
Celebrity may give Russell Brand a platform, but it doesn’t make him wise.
