Interesting move by Hamilton’s Board of Health to divert money from Flamboro Slots for a part time position to create a ‘made in Hamilton’ strategy to prevent problem gambling.
Sounds pretty noble doesn’t it ?
Just to remind you that the Board of Health is, in fact, City Council ; they meet once a month as the Board of Health to deal specifically with issues of public health.
Preventing problem gambling is a motherhood issue, who wouldn’t be supportive of such an idea ?
But there are a number of problem gambling programs already available through different agencies that are funded by the Province.
Is $70,000 a year going to make any difference or is this just a re-iteration of some Councilor’s and for that matter ,the Medical Officer of Health’s opposition to a gaming facility in the urban area ?
From scratch tickets to lotteries and slots, gambling is happening each and every day in our community and sadly, a very small percentage of those who gamble may fall prey to addiction.
But there is, for instance, a much greater problem with alcohol abuse and addiction in our society, yet I don’t see Hamilton Council dedicating money to that concern.
It seems that there may be a lot more politics than prevention behind this initiative .
