This report from last week that told us that the City has payed out over $2 million in severances in the last couple of years is disturbing on so many different levels.
People who are terminated with cause, in other words, because they’ve done something wrong, are still receiving generous severance packages.
What’s going on here?
Apparently, some of those who were let go were as a result of sexual harassment.
Some City Staffers have told me that kind of behavior goes on all too often and even if the accused if found to be culpable, they still get a severance package.
But there seems to be a systemic problem here too.
The fact that 37 managers have been fired in the past couple of years should be sounding off alarm bells.
If these people were of questionable character or not qualified for the position, why were they hired or promoted in the first place ?
And, if their termination was due to incompetence or unacceptable conduct, why have we shelled out over $2 million ?
There’s something very wrong here.
One or two bad apples that need to be dealt with is not unusual.
But when you terminate 37 managers in a relatively short period of time and pay out generous severances , we’ve got a problem.
And guess who gets stuck with the bill !
