East End store fronts being used as illegal apartments are in the city’s crosshairs.
And Ward 4 councillor Sam Merulla says it may be time to expropriate the properties of the worst offenders along Kenilworth and Barton.
The city is planning a review of all mixed-use commercial spaces next year.
But Merulla says it may be time to take the blight off the face of the east end just like council did with the City Motor Hotel.
A consultant’s report says a critical factor in boosting economic development in the area is dealing with the high vacancy rate of commercial spaces and the illegal use of those spaces as apartments.
It goes on to say the area has “good bones” to build on with things like plenty of on street parking.
Some recommendations include creating green spaces, making the streets safer and more pedestrian-friendly.
