The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce is wrangling support for a new startup that helps job seekers and employers connect in a unique way.
Chamber President and CEO Keanin Loomis says gone are the days of searching the classified section.
A new online jobs portal called Magnet allows job seekers to anonomously enter their resume and other pertinent details.
Employers can then search specific key words or qualifications to find their ideal candidate.
Loomis says keeping the candidates identity shielded prior to contact helps put the focus on skills.
“Even though we are more enlightened now than we ever have been as a society, there are still some latent biases”
“When you or I look at a resume we can tell when someone is a newcomer, how old they are.”
Loomis says in addition to making professional connections, Magnet will also generate important data that will help provide a clearer snapshot of the local labour market.
Loomis hopes in the near future it will become the de facto jobs board for the city.
So far there are 30 post secondary partners, 75 thousand job seekers and over 4 thousand employers province wide using Magnet.
