Hamilton’s New Police Chief has officially been introduced.
Eric Girt had been Deputy Chief for nearly ten years.
He was one of two internal candidates for the job along with fellow Deputy Chief Ken Weatherill.
Lloyd Ferguson, Chair of the Hamilton Police Services Board, says it was experience that set Girt apart from the other internal candidate vying for the job, Ken Weatherill.
The President of the Hamilton Police Association is also voicing support.
Clint Twolan says the police services board had two “great candidates” to choose from. By choosing from within, Twolan adds that we get a chief who already understands his personnel as well as Hamilton’s unique challenges and issues.
Girt is now in charge of one of the largest police services in Ontario with about 850 sworn officers.
The police budget last year was almost 150 million dollars.
