The Hamilton Police Marine Unit and Hamilton Port Authority are reaching out to recreational boaters through a summer safety campaign.
Harbour Master Vicki Gruber says the central message is to “stay alert and steer clear”.
She notes that over 600 commercial vessels enter and exit the harbour each year and can’t turn quickly or “stop on a dime”.
Gruber adds that recreational boaters need to remember to navigate around them very safely and to “give them room”.
Constable Ben Rushton with the Hamilton Police Marine Unit adds that while they haven’t had any major incidents in recent memory, there have been “close calls”.
He adds that police will also be actively patrolling and conducting safety inspections as part of their summer campaign dubbed “Operation Safe and Sober”.
