Toronto MPP Cheri DiNovo is now the first candidate in the race to replace federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair.
The Parkdale-High Park representative says she has intentions to run but will do so unofficially.
In her announcement DiNovo pointed to the registration fee of $30 thousand dollars and the spending cap of $1.5 million, a benchmark she deemed at odds with socialist values.
“Money should not in any way be a barrier for the leadership a democratic socialist party” stated DiNovo during her announcement.
No other candidates have publicly announced their bid at this time.
The vote for a new NDP leader will take place in the fall of 2017.
