The first stage of construction is underway on a 139 million dollar project that will ultimately see Hamilton Harbour delisted as an environmental “area of concern”.
Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger was among those on a boat tour of Randle Reef on Friday where toxic sediment is being trapped within a containment structure.
The first phase of that work, including pile driving is underway. Eisenberger adds that he’s pleased to see “the shovels in the water”.
Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring also pleased with the progress adding “maybe we’ll have a big swim in the bay, all of us, when it’s done”.
Federal Environment Minister Catharine McKenna and Glen Murray, Ontario’s Environment Minister, also got a first hand look at the project from aboard the Harbour Queen.
The containment structure is being funded equally by all levels of government and will take several years to complete..
