Solo drivers will be able to buy permits to drive in carpool lanes on the QEW between Burlington and Oakville.
Starting Sept. 15, existing HOV lanes from Guelph Line to Trafalgar Road will be designated “High-Occupancy Toll Lanes” in both directions.
Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca says this will mark the start of a four-year pilot project before the province rolls out a wider network of these lanes in southern Ontario.
Vehicles with two or more people will still be able to use the lanes in the 15.5-kilometre stretch for free, while those driving alone will have to buy a permit to do so.
Drivers can enter a lottery to win one of the permits, which will cost $60 per month, to use the lanes without a passenger.
