The effort to get more family doctors in Hamilton has not been gaining ground.
In fact, Hamilton’s Physician Recruiter Jane Walker says the program has been treading water if not going backwards over the last several years.
Walker will be telling the city’s Physician Recruitment and Retention Steering Committee this afternoon that after 13 years, the number of family doctors in Hamilton has gone up roughly two per cent in that time.
There are now just over 350 family doctors in the city.
Walker says a big part of the problem is retirements.
The committee will be told that as of July, there will be 20 doctors retiring this year with only 13 recruited so far to replace them.
