63 McMaster University scientists are publicly protesting the way $1-billion in Canadian health research funding is distributed.
They are among nearly 13-hundred researchers across Canada who have signed an open letter to Health Minister Jane Philpott, asking the government to immediately address the way studies receive funding.
McMaster’s Dr. Peter Rosenbaum, Canada research chair in childhood disability, says the Canadian Institutes of Health Research is broken.
He says one issue is the elimination of face-to-face, peer-to-peer meetings to discuss grant proposals.
They are now done online with a virtual panel.
Dr. Rosenbaum says another problem is having too many reviewers which has lead to “real problems.”
The Health Minister has asked the CIHR to meet with the scientists.
