The provincial and federal government have partnered on an investment in Hamilton’s agriculture and food sector.
Known as the growing forward 2 initiative, Ontario Minister of Agriculture Jeff Leal says it’s about remaining competitive.
“We want to make sure that the investment improves our productivity, brings about innovative change and allows the company to be involved in the export market.”
Maple Leaf Foods is one of 18 projects to receive funding in the Hamilton region.
President and CEO Michael McCain says it has helped to modernize facilities and update employee skills.
“Maple Leaf was able to transition two hundred of our people who worked an an older out of date facility.”
McCain adds that Mohawk College dedicated two weeks of extensive training in robotics and technical problem solving to Maple Leaf employees.
More than 740 thousand dollars have been invested in the agriculture and food sector through this initiative.
