It’s official, the United Steelworkers union is calling for a public inquiry into US Steel Canada’s creditors arrangement act.
Employees past and present packed local 1005 headquarters Thursday evening to hear about the union’s next step.
Paul Miller, MPP for Hamilton East Stoney Creek says he will be drafting a request for a public hearing that will be sent to ministry officials as well as Prime minister Justin Trudeau.
President of Local 8782, Bill Ferguson told the crowd “we have a court system right now that is saying to us they want to chose who is going to be the successor here, they are going to choose whether or not we get our pension and they are going to use that available cash to bank roll somebody else.”
Liberal MP Bob Bratina responded at the meeting to calls for inquiry saying he has no objections but reminded the union that the process could take years.
