Hamilton has joined the long list of municipalities to impose an open air burning ban and to suspend all burn permits.
Chief Fire Prevention Officer Bob Simpson says it’s a response to weeks of dry weather coupled with extreme temperatures, as well as low water levels in the rural area.
Burlington and the majority of Niagara Region have had similar bans in place for some time.
Simpson notes that risk factors in Hamilton are building, including an increase in grass fires in recent weeks.
The ban comes just two days after a discarded cigarette sparked a deadly blaze near Tapleytown, although Simpson stresses that tragedy did not factor into the timing.
