The new Bernie Morelli Rec Centre is getting the go ahead from city councillors even though it’s five million dollars over budget before construction begins.
The lowest bid came in at 25 million dollars for the rec centre which includes a seniors facility, ice pad and splash pad, as well a connection to a revamped Jimmy Thompson pool.
The original budget was just under 20 million.
But staff say inflation, poor soil conditions and extra design and demolition costs contributed to high costs.
The centre is being built across from Tim Horton’s Field and beside a new public high school.
Construction is expected to begin in the fall.
