One of the great advantages of having this job is you get to meet all kinds of interesting people from all walks of life and ask them questions.
However not all are human.
Every year members of the Hamilton Police Service K9 unit make a stop at CHML, usually when they are on their way to McMaster Children’s Hospital for a visit to cheer up the kids.
Over the years I have met a few of the dogs and their police officer handlers.
I was always amazed at the relationship between dog and cop and how such large dominating animals are so well trained and controlled.
Whenever here they were like any other loving animal who enjoyed the attention.
But when given the command their focus changes immediately and are all business.
You can imagine the bond that develops between dog and cop as they train together and become each other’s lifeline.
So it was so sad to hear of the loss of Maverick a giant purebred German Shepard who was Const. Johnny Sabatini’s wing man for 7 years.
What makes this story even sadder is the fact that this week Maverick was set to retire and spend the rest of his life as their family pet before unexpectedly passing from medical complications.
Thank you Maverick for your service to this great city.
I’m Scott Thompson.
