A plan is forming that involves two large social housing properties near the west harbour.
CityHousing Hamilton is proposing a private sector partnership to redevelop the 91 unit Jamesville townhouse complex while keeping and repairing the aging 146 unit tower at 500 MacNab Street.
Agency chair Chad Collins says they’ll have no trouble drawing expressions of interest in the Jamesville property which is next to the new GO Station.
He notes that there’s a lot going on in that area and it’s a very valuable piece of property, making him hopeful of finding a private partner to not only repair the site but to invest in a mixed-use development.
The cost of repairs to the tower on MacNab Street is estimated at 6-to-8 million dollars, a number that Collins says came in far lower than originally expected.
Collins says they’ll look to secure federal and provincial funding for that project.
With more than 61 hundred names now on the wait list for affordable housing, he stresses that the overall goal is to create more units.
