Cancer Care Ontario is partnering with regional programs to get more women booked in for a mammogram this month.
The “Just Book It” campaign is putting a focus on women ages 50 to 54 in the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant area.
Numbers from the Ontario Breast Screening program show that 46.3 per cent of this group are either overdue or have never had a mammogram.
Alyssa Higginson with the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Regional Cancer Program says the goal is to make screening a health care routine.
“When you have that initial mammogram done at fifty we can find very, very small areas that become irregular over time by just being able to compare previous mammogram images.”
Women with no signs of breast cancer are eligible for free mammograms starting at age 50.
OBSP also screens women at age 30 who may be at high risk based on family or medical history.
