Those City Councilors who are still sitting on the fence about LRT, claiming that they need more information, just got the one answer that really matters; the billion dollars is for LRT and only LRT !
That clarification comes from MPP Ted McMeekin, who is Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier.
That’s important because the fence sitters on Council tell us that they want to explore the possibility of using the money for other projects, but according to McMeekin, that’s not in the cards.
On top of that, Councilors were told by their legal department that they would need a two thirds majority vote to kill LRT; that’s not likely to happen since there are at least six solid pro LRT votes on Council.
I understand that there are many people who oppose LRT for a variety of reasons , and that’s to be expected with a project of this magnitude.
And, I understand that some Councilors are just outright opposed to LRT, and although I disagree with them, I respect their right to express their discontent.
But, it’s time to put up or shut up.
Is this Council willing to say ‘No’ to a billion dollar infrastructure project and see the money go somewhere else ?
Because, in spite of all the posturing going on, that’s the only question that matters .
