Hamilton City Councilors have hijacked the contentious ward boundary review and decided that they, in their infinite wisdom, will not only decide if, but how any changes to Hamilton’s electoral map will take place.
After a lengthy meeting yesterday, Councilors seemed to reject both of the proposed changes that came from an independent study about ward boundaries that Council themselves had ordered and that cost about $270,000.
You may recall that there were a series of public meetings where input was gathered from concerned citizens and with that feedback and an objective look at population growth , the consultants came up with two possible scenarios.
Council didn’t seem to like either proposal.
Instead they decided that they will consult with their constituents and come up with their own plans for any changes.
Frankly, the idea reeks of self interest.
First of all, the public has already been consulted, so why repeat that process ?
But more importantly, the reason for hiring an independent firm to do this work was to avoid the possibility of gerrymandering, where elected officials define their own electoral districts to include areas where they know they have the most voter support.
The ward boundary discussion was an opportunity for City Council to show vision and big picture thinking.
Instead , we got self interest and parochialism.
Very disappointing !
