An elderly woman is dead after she was hit by a van on Highway 8 in Stoney Creek Friday evening.
Detective Constable Wes Wilson of the Hamilton Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) says just after 6PM, the 85-year-old woman was helping the granddaughter of her neighbour cross the street to get to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church for a confirmation ceremony, just east Green Road, when she was struck.
The Hamilton Spectator is reporting both the 12-year-old girl and the woman were taken to hospital. The woman-whose name is not being released at the request of her family-was later pronounced dead.
Wilson says there was no “criminality” involved, meaning the 42-year-old woman driving the van was not impaired by drugs or alcohol and was not speeding. The van will undergo a mechanical inspection Monday.
He adds, no charges have been laid, and the investigation is ongoing.
The westbound lanes of Highway 8 from King Street East to Green Road were closed until midnight while the CRU investigated.
Any witnesses are asked to call Det. Const. Wes Wilson at 905-546-4755.
