Vancouver School Board adds Student Trustee to its board
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)
The Vancouver School Board has voted unanimously for a student trustee to join its board. Trustee Mike Lombardi thinks it is a good decision. "It's all about bringing a student voice to decision making to make our schools a better place for kids, and to promote student success." The student trustee won't have a vote, but can contribute to discussion. With this move, Vancouver becomes the first district west of Ontario to have a student school board trustee.

Doctor warns barbeque season brings high cases of food poisoning
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)
Barbeque season is finally here and BC's top doctor says with that comes a new wave of illness. Dr. Perry Kendall says the good news is that, unlike many seasonal illnesses, this one common to this time of year is 100% preventable. “This is the time when you do see upticks in food poisoning.  That's why it's really important to observe food safety in the kitchen and cook things thoroughly.” Dr. Kendall says when it comes cooking on the barbeque, people unintentionally compromise food safety. He says things like not washing cutting boards, getting raw chicken juices onto salads, and not cooking hamburger meat thoroughly are the most common mistakes.

Mountie loses nine days pay for assault and pepper spraying incidents
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)
A Quesnel Mountie has been ordered to forfeit nine days pay for slapping a man and spraying another with pepper spray. Constable Timothy Wang was the Senior Mountie and the School Liason Officer at the Quesnel Detachment back in 2009. One day in July of that year, he slapped a handcuffed man in the face. Wang also released pepper spray under the door of a drunk-tank cell into the face of another man. A court later found Wang guilty of assault for the face-slap and sentenced him to an absolute discharge , which meant no punishment. An internal review by the RCMP resulted in a disciplinary hearing held last fall. Wang, who has 15 years on the force, was reprimanded and ordered to forfeit three days pay for the face-slap, and six days pay for the pepper spray incident.

Health Minister says seniors aren't being nickel and dimed
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)
B.C's Health Minister says wheelchair fees in long term residential care homes are not unusual and are administered fairly, including exempting those who can't afford it. Terry Lake says it boils down to if a senior has the means then they have to foot the bill for their wheelchair. Lake says those that don't will have a wheelchair provided. He says the issue is being made into something it isn't by the independent MLA for Delta South. "Ms. Huntington is actually trying to scare people and making it sound like this is something new. This is very similar to what happens in many other places. You know if we were to have universal access to all of that we would have to raise taxes significantly. That is something that I don't think a majority of British Columbians are willing to do." Lake says nothing has changed within the health authorities but instead they are just trying to clarify what is covered and what isn't. "We have always had a policy where by people who can't afford those wheelchairs would have one provided. What Fraser Health is saying from what I understand is that if you have the ability to pay ...

Wheelchair fee the tip of the iceberg for seniors
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)
The MLA for Delta South says that the much maligned $25 a month wheelchair fees for seniors in public care homes is really the tip of the iceberg. Vicki Huntington says she's spoken with sources at Fraser Health who tell her that as of the start of September, mobility challenged seniors are going to have to part with a hundred bucks a month to get around. "Existing residents as of September 1st can rent a Fraser Health wheelchair for 25 dollars, but after September the 1st, if you're a new resident, you have to rent from a private vendor, which means 70 to 100 dollars, and he said yes, that's correct." Huntington says existing residents, proving financial hardship will still pay the 25-dollar a month fee. But Fraser Health says this is all a big misunderstanding, and Huntington has her facts wrong. Fraser Health spokeswoman Tasleem Juma says while new and existing residents will have the option of privately renting or buying, paying that 25 dollar a month fee for a Fraser Health wheelchair will still be an option. "If you are unable to purchase or rent a wheelchair from a third-party vendor, and need one that's being lent to ...

Abbotsford keeps its manure controversy in-house
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)
We may never know the names of the City of Abbotsford staff who spread manure at the site of a homeless camp a couple weeks ago. Mayor Bruce Banman says the internal review is ongoing, and when it comes to naming names, it is a complex issue. "There is labour negotiations with the union. There are privacy issues. There is all kinds of legal questions that need to be answered before that can happen.  And I wish I could tell you a better answer than that but this is the complicated world we live in." Banman also would not commit to making the results of the review public without or without the names of the guilty parties. But what about being accountable to taxpayers? "It can't be in all cases because of legal issues as I mentioned." He says what is more important is fixing the decision process that led to the manure incident. Meanwhile, the abbotsford police department has asked for an investigation into allegations officers damaged tents, and used pepper spray, at a homeless camp.  Constable Ian MacDonald says they have officially asked the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner to look into the accusations. "I don't ...

Simi Sara wins national RTDNA Award
Simi’s editorial was in response to listener’s comments about immigration and his wish that people would adopt “the Canadian way of living”, and that everyone should “blend in” and look the same. Simi coolly dismisses the thoughts as “nothing new”. In her editorial, she describes her own career path, the hard work, and her desire to be just like everyone else. She then pleasantly tells this listener that they are more alike than he may wish to think, and eloquently defends his freedom to express his views.
