    Crime in tallest building
    VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)
A man was hospitalized Thursday evening after being beaten in a suite at the Shangri-La Hotel complex about 8 pm. Vancouver Police and the Emergency Response Team responded to a call the man made himself after escaping his captors. He was immediately sent to hospital for treatment of injuries to his face. Police arrested two men and a woman and are looking for another man in connection with the abduction and beating. It's believed the suspect is known to authorities.

Police seek man who preys on young girls
    CASTLEGAR/CKNW(AM980)
Mounties in Castlegar are going through images of naked teens taken from the computer of a 24 year old man. Police are trying to figure out their ages, as the man is already facing sex charges involving a 14 year old girl. Mounties say the man had taken photo's of the 14 year old and sent them to her Facebook account. A family member contacted police. Acting on a search warrant, investigators seized his computer and a camera. They say they also found out the man had sex with the girl several times. A search of the computer turned up images of several other nude Castlegar-area girls or teens. Police are working to determine their ages. The man's name isn't being released to protect the identities of victims. Mounties say he'll appear in Court in October. Until then he's been released under conditions not to have contact with the victim or anyone under 18. He's also banned from owning a computer or having access to the web.

A different kind of Green Card
    VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)
Workers staged a rally outside Vancouver's Westin Bayshore Hotel Thursday afternoon to protest an initiative they say is less about going green, than it is about making greenbacks. Unite Here Local 40 spokesperson Michelle Travis says the hotel's parent company, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide offers a 5 dollar food and beverage voucher to guests who decline getting their rooms cleaned for the day. She says the so-called 'green cards' short workers shifts, and are more harmful to the environment, "So when they go into one of these rooms much dirtier, what they're saying is they're using more water, more electricity and having to use additional chemicals in order to clean the room." She says many hotel workers are struggling to make ends meet while Starwood is reporting strong earnings, and recently opened its one-thousandth hotel.

    Very lucky people
    VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)
Several hours after what should have been a minor collision at Main and 30th in Vancouver, dozens of people were stopping by to stare into a giant hole in the ground. In the hole, about forty feet below...a car on its roof. After colliding with an SUV in the intersection, it mounted the sidewalk, went through a fence and then plunged into a open construction site pit. Claudio Reid finished work on the site just hours before. He stopped by when he heard the news, "Thank God there is nobody hurt." He says he was working where the car landed just this morning. Incredibly, the injuries to the driver are said to be minor.

    Guess the signs aren't working
    VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)
Radar will soon be coming to construction sites in this BC. Traffic control flaggers met with the RCMP and Transportation Ministry staff Thursday to talk about safety following several crashes in construction zones. Flagger Diane Herback says they were assured safety is a priority, "And they are totally on our side. We formed kind of, like, a little committee with them. We are going to meet once a month and the days that they write tickets in construction zones they are going to contact the media to let the public know that they mean business. Herback says they were given a promise there will be radar set up at construction sites within two weeks.

There's a lot of misinformation out there
    VICTORIA/CKNW(AM980)
Finance Minister Colin Hansen says he's not surprised that a new poll shows two thirds of British Columbians feel the HST has cost them money.  Hansen says the survey by Angus Reid Public Opinion confirms many people have some bad information about the tax, "63 per-cent think that their cell phone bills went up, which they didn't. 61 per-cent think that adult clothing got more expensive because of the HST. That's not true. And what was really surprising is that 76 per-cent thought that basic groceries would be subject to the HST, and of course they're exempt." Hansen complains the Government wanted to correct that misinformation in a mail-out to British Columbians that Elections BC rejected during the Bill Vander Zalm ANTI-HST petition campaign.

    Seniors beware
    VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)
Vancouver Police say this scam artist preys on the elderly. He was a person of interest to the VPD twice in 2008, then it's alleged 54 year old Richard Earl Rupert worked Toronto seniors for a while. Constable Jana McGuinness says he usually poses as a property manager, telling victims they owe back rent, "In one case we know of, he pushed a woman down, so he has been known to be violent in the past." That was in Toronto. He's wanted in four other cities including Winnipeg.

    Where does it all end?
    VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)
Vancouver's Mayor says it's a fine balancing act to do what's best for business and improve the transportation network, "What's happened over the last 15 years is that the number of cars coming into downtown is decreasing quite dramatically which is directly tired to congestion and the fact most people don't want to drive their cars downtown if they don't have to. That means business in the downtown, to improve their lot, they have to have more people coming in walking, biking and through transit." Robertson says city research shows Hornby is the best route for another bike lane.

How bad is it at 12th & Cambie?
    VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)
Vancouver's Mayor says he wants City Hall to be transparent but he says that's not the way it's always been. Gregor Robertson's responding to claims of low morale,  distrust and fear by senior managers outlined in an email to the City Manager, "Across the board we want to make sure City Hall is transparent in all of our operations and that is not how things have been run in the past. We're going to be more hands on with that and that requires a lot of change by some staff who are used to the old ways of doing things." Under the previous Council, Robertson says, there was a more relaxed way of doing business.

    Speed demons will lose vehicles
    VICTORIA/CKNW AM 980
Drive too fast and lose your car.  That'll be the bottom line when new speeding regulations come into effect in BC on September 20th.  The Solicitor-General's ministry says it's targetting BC's worst speeders.  As of the 20th, a charge of excessive speeding will trigger a mandatory seven day vehicle impoundment for a first offence, a 30 day impoundment for a second, and 60 days for subsequent offences.  Excessive speeding is defined as travelling 40 kilometres or more over the posted speed limit.
